Description: Born in 1930, Wim Statius Muller was a Curaçaoan pianist and composer who is renowned for his contributions to "Antillean Classical Music." He was frequently referred to as the "Chopin of the Caribbean" because of his proficiency in "Danzas antillanas," which is a genre of rhythmic and graceful piano pieces that resemble European waltzes but contain Caribbean flavor. While attending the Royal Conservatory of The Hague where he studied music, he also worked as a cryptanalyst for NATO.  Despite his career in intelligence, he continued to be devoted to music, writing and performing works that captured Curaçao's rich cultural legacy. Additionally, his music is a distinctive expression of his native musical traditions as it fuses the syncopated rhythms of the Caribbean with classical techniques.

Wim Statius Muller's grandson, Alexander Kraft van Ermel, is a gifted pianist who has devoted his life to conserving and advancing his grandfather's musical heritage. Alexander was raised was raised on Curaçao, where he was exposed to the island's musical customs and received instruction from both his mother and none other than Wim Statius Muller himself. Additionally, he has recorded music by Muller, including the well-known waltz Nostalgia, on recordings such as Antillean Dances vol. 1 & 2. Muller's distinctive fusion of classical and Caribbean music is preserved for future generations via his performances, including those on Podium Witteman and in collaboration with his mother, Annette Statius Muller.

Annette Statius Muller

This next artist is another member of Muller’s immediate family who’s also almost just as talented as him. Wim Statius Muller's daughter, Annette Statius Muller, is a talented pianist who has been instrumental in preserving her father's musical legacy by teaching her son, Alexander Kraft van Ermel, his distinctive Antillean waltz tradition. The two of them performed a heartfelt duet of Shon Coco, one of Muller's well-known pieces, fusing classical technique with the rhythmic influence of Caribbean music. Their performance exemplifies the family's strong musical heritage and dedication to preserving Muller's work. Marcel Worm

Dutch pianist Marcel Worm has expressed a deep appreciation for Wim Statius Muller's compositions.
